OCTG — Oil Country Tubular Goods — is the umbrella term for the casing, tubing, and drill pipe that make up every oil and gas well. Every joint is manufactured to a governing specification (API 5CT for casing and tubing, API 5DP for drill pipe) that fixes its dimensions, grade, and connection type, because a failure downhole is not a cosmetic defect — it can mean a blown-out well, a stuck string, or a lost production interval.

1. What Is OCTG?

DEFINITION — OCTG
Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) are the tubular steel products — casing, tubing, and drill pipe — used to drill, complete, and produce oil and gas wells. OCTG is manufactured to API 5CT (casing and tubing) or API 5DP (drill pipe), which fix chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and inspection requirements for each grade.

Three things distinguish OCTG from ordinary structural or line pipe: it is manufactured to a narrow band of certified mechanical properties (not just a nominal wall thickness), it carries threaded connections engineered to transmit tension and torque without leaking under pressure, and its grade selection is driven by downhole conditions — pressure, temperature, and the presence of H₂S — rather than by pipeline flow requirements.

Casing goes in first and stays for the life of the well — each string (conductor, surface, intermediate, production) is progressively smaller in diameter and cemented into place, providing structural support and isolating formations from each other. Tubing runs inside the innermost casing string and is the pipe that actually carries produced oil or gas to surface; because it sees direct contact with produced fluids, it is often the first component upgraded to a corrosion-resistant grade even when the casing around it is standard carbon steel. Drill pipe is used only during drilling itself, connecting the rig's surface equipment to the bit — it never stays in the well and is inspected and re-used across many wells.

3. Governing Standards: API 5CT, API 5DP, and ISO Equivalents

API Specification 5CT (equivalent to ISO 11960) is the standard covering casing and tubing pipe body, couplings, and accessory material — it sets chemical composition limits, mechanical property requirements (yield strength, tensile strength, hardness), dimensional tolerances, and the inspection and testing regime for each grade. API 5DP governs drill pipe in a comparable way, with grades defined by minimum yield strength rather than sour-service qualification. Critical Engineering Point — The T95 NACE Trap
API 5CT permits T95 hardness up to 25.4 HRC, but NACE MR0175 caps sour-service hardness at 22 HRC. A mill certificate showing API-compliant T95 does not by itself confirm NACE compliance — always check the hardness result against the NACE limit, not just the API limit, before accepting sour-service T95.

5. OCTG Connections: API Threads vs. Premium Connections

API 5CT defines three standard connection types for casing — short round thread (STC), long round thread (LTC), and buttress thread (BTC) — plus a generic category covering proprietary premium connections. API threads rely on thread compound to help seal; they are cost-effective and adequate for the large majority of sweet, moderate-pressure wells. Premium connections replace the API thread form with a metal-to-metal seal and torque shoulder, eliminating the API thread's reliance on compound for gas-tightness.

Engineering Insight — When Premium Connections Earn Their Premium
Premium connections cost more per joint and per running operation, but the decision isn't really about the connection in isolation — it's a total-cost-of-ownership question against the cost of a workover or lost production if an API connection leaks under sour, HPHT, or high-torque directional conditions. Procurement Note — Galling Risk on CRA Make-Up
Galling during make-up is one of the most common field failures on 13Cr and CRA connections specifically, not carbon steel — the softer, more ductile chromium alloy is more prone to thread-face damage during stabbing and torque-up than standard carbon steel grades. API 5CT sets the inspection regime for each grade and product specification level (PSL1 or PSL2), typically combining non-destructive testing — ultrasonic testing (UT), electromagnetic inspection (EMI), or magnetic particle inspection (MPI) depending on grade and wall thickness — with hydrostatic testing, dimensional checks, and hardness verification. PSL2 adds tighter chemistry control, mandatory Charpy impact testing on certain grades, and full mill traceability. 8. How to Select the Right OCTG for Your Well

Grade and connection selection is not two independent decisions — they interact. A sour-service grade may force a premium connection even in a moderate-pressure well, because API thread compound performance in H₂S service is harder to guarantee long-term. Conversely, a high-strength sweet-service well (P110, Q125) may not need a premium connection at all if the string isn't subject to high bending or cyclic loads. The starting point is always the same five parameters: depth, pressure, temperature, H₂S/CO₂ presence, and load type (straight vertical vs. deviated/horizontal). What is the difference between casing and tubing?
